Bar snacks are great to accompany a drink!

Many food and drink venues will serve bar snacks at or behind a bar for you to enjoy.

For the most part though, bar snacks are a middling mixture, a reasonable haul of spiced or honey roasted nuts, which you genuinely do want to eat, mixed in with baked wheatey somethings that you don't.

What begins as a quick pick, pick, pick at the bowl soon becomes an excavation process, as you fumble through the pile of unappetising stuff in search of the ones you genuinely want.

MANHATTAN EAST

This one is great - all great bars should serve it!

Dale DeGroff's remake of the Manhattan, an original recipe created for House & Garden's special 2007 Design Issue

1 1/2 ounces Makers Mark Bourbon Whiskey
½ ounce Dry Sake
2 Dashes bitters Peychaud's Bitters
1 ounce Canton Ginger Liqueur*

Stir and strain into a chilled martini glass.
Garnish with a flamed** orange peel.(flaming the peel is optional but it makes a nice show!)

FLAMING: To flame the oil, hold a lit match in one hand, and the twist in the other. Hold the twist by the side not the ends, between thumb and forefinger, skin side down, about four inches above the drink. Don't squeeze or you'll lose all the oil before you flame. Hold the match between the drink and the twist, closer to the twist. Snap the twist sharply, propelling the oil through the lit match and onto the surface of the drink. (Be sure to hold twist far enough from the drink to avoid getting a smoky film on the glass.)

Cabernet - a type of red wine, high in tannin and medium to full bodied with a distinctive flavor of black currant (Cabernet Sauvignon)

Campari - a bright red type of orange bitters named after its Italian inventor
Canadian Whiskey - a liquor made from corn, rye, and barley; always blended and usually aged for six or more years in oak casks
Cappuccino - a coffee with frothy milk on top, sprinkled with cinnamon and grated chocolate
Chambord - a French liqueur made from small black raspberries
Chambraise - a French liqueur made from small strawberries
Chartreuse - an herb -based cordial that comes in either yellow or green varieties; created by Carthusian monks in France in the early 17th century
Chaser - a mild drink, such as beer, taken after a hard liquor
Cider - an alcoholic drink made from the fermentation of apple juice
Cognac - a fine brandy from the Cognac region in France

15 other uses for Vodka

We believe these are common uses on Vodka in Russia.

1. To remove a bandage painlessly, saturate the bandage with vodka. The Solvent dissolves adhesive.

2. To clean the caulking around bathtubs and showers, fill a Trigger-spray bottle with vodka, spray the caulking, let set five Minutes and wash clean. The alcohol in the vodka kills mold and mildew.

3. To clean your eyeglasses, simply wipe the lenses with a soft, clean cloth dampened with vodka. The alcohol in the vodka cleans the glass and kills germs.

4. Prolong the life of razors by filling a cup with vodka and letting Your safety razor blade soak in the alcohol after shaving. The vodka disinfectsthe blade and prevents rusting.

5. Spray vodka on vomit stains, scrub with a brush, and then blot dry.

6 Using a cotton ball, apply vodka to your face as an astringent to cleanse the skin and tighten pores.

7. Add a jigger of vodka to a 12-ounce bottle of shampoo. The alcohol cleanses the scalp, removes toxins from hair, and stimulates the growth of healthy hair.

8. Fill a sixteen-ounce trigger-spray bottle and spray bees or wasps to kill them.

9. Pour one-half cup vodka and one-half cup water in a Ziploc freezer bag and freeze for a slushy, refreshable ice pack for aches, pain or black eyes.

10. Fill a clean, used mayonnaise jar with freshly packed lavender flowers, fill the jar with vodka, seal the lid tightly and set in the Sun for three days. Strain liquid through a coffee filter, then apply the tincture to aches and pains.

11. To relieve a fever, use a washcloth to rub vodka on your chest and back as a liniment.

12. To cure foot odor, wash your feet with vodka.

13. Vodka will disinfect and alleviate a jellyfish sting.

14. Pour vodka over an area affected with poison ivy to remove the Urushiol oil from your skin.

15. Swish a shot of vodka over an aching tooth Allow your gums to absorb some of the alcohol to numb the pain.

Wine Tasting Evening a Hit!

The Hide Bar hosted a Wine Tasting event on Wednesday in association with Retrack Introductions, Best of Bury and Apparition Marketing & Design.

Starting off at 7pm guests arrived and enjoyed some light nibbles in preparation for the wine sampling. We were lucky enough to have a Mayfair Wine Expert attend to inform us about the various types of wine.

With a glass in each hand we sampled a range of whites and reds and also some Champagne and Prosecco. It was really intesting to taste the different varieties.

Also included were the love themed goody bags that everyone got to take with them as they left.

Around 30 people attended and hopefully some numbers exchanged (as it was a singles event) but if you would like any information on how to join an introductions agency such as Retrack contact Lesley Wilson on 01638 711616.

The benefits of going to a bar without a wingman!

When it comes to attracting women at bars and clubs, men generally choose to go out in groups and then split up once they see a woman with whom they find attractive.

In theory this sounds like a great idea, yet, the benefits of going out solo are just as good if not better.

When you first start learning how to really attract women it would be great to impress your friends with your new found skills.

However, one of the keys to success with attracting women is your ability to interact with new people.

When we are with our friends we tend to stay with our friends.

When you go to a club it is not uncommon to see a group of men hanging out gawking at all the women and at the end of the night they tend to still be gawking at all the women left except perhaps one or two who left earlier with women or went home with their girlfriends.

Unless your friend is also learning how to attract women with you or is already good at attracting women you just might find yourself carrying a conversation at the end of the night with your friend talking about all the hot women that neither one of you talked to.

When you go out by yourself it also forces you to mingle with new people, and with no one there that you know it allows you to take on whatever personality you like and do whatever you want without hearing about it from your friends.

Once you become more comfortable with going out by yourself, you may begin to also notice that more women approach you. A man who goes out by himself and looks comfortable and relaxes to a woman automatically seems confidence and confidence is something that every woman is attracted to.

Overall when you go to a bar or club the more fun you are having the more likely you are to attract women.

Drinking and driving

What is the drink driving limit?

In the UK the drink driving limit is:

35 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath; or
80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood; or
107 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of urine.

How many units can I drink before driving?

The legal drink drive limit cannot be safely converted into a certain number of units, as it depends on a number of factors to include gender, body mass and how quickly your body absorbs alcohol into the blood stream.

Can drinking coffee or having a cold shower help to sober me up?

No, drinking coffee or having a cold shower will not sober you up as this does not remove alcohol from your blood stream.

How long do the effects of alcohol take to wear off?

On average it takes one hour for a healthy liver to process one unit of alcohol. However, it does depend on your body mass, gender and how much food you have consumed. Even if you feel fine after drinking heavily in the evening there is still a high possibility that you will be above the legal limit should you drive the following morning.

What constitutes a unit of alcohol?

One unit of alcohol is 10ml (1cl) by volume or 8g by weight, of pure alcohol.

Best bar chat up lines...

10. Line: Are you tired? Because you've been running around my mind all day.

Answer: If I had the choice I wouldn't of been.I don't actually believe that people would use that, I could be wrong though!

9. Line: Is that a ladder in your tights or a stairway to heaven.

Answer: It's a ladder and thanks for pointing it out.Why, why, why?

8. Line: Did it hurt? ["What?"] When you fell from heaven!

Answer: *shakes head and rolls eyes, then walks away*

This is a classic, I think anybody that uses this is just too desperate and trying far to hard. There are lots of variations on this including "Somebody tell God he's missing an angel", "Is it a day off in heaven today" and "What time do you have to be back in heaven". All very poor.

7. Line: So, do you come here often?

Answer: Yes, thanks.I don't actually think this is as bad as some of the others.

I think it's mean to be more of a conversation starter than a chat up line, a bit like "the weather's been nice recently". Despite this I wouldn't even recommend it as a conversation starter, I think it just makes the whole situation awkward.

6. Line: Get your coat love, you've pulled.

Answer: It's a shame you haven't then.

The alternative answer is "I haven't got a coat", but would normally result in a reply of "even better lets go!" Somebody tried to use a variation of this on one of my friends in a club, which was "What's your cloakroom number, you've pulled". As my friend was slightly drunk and didn't have a coat in the cloakroom, she just ended up getting really confused and the line didn't pay off.

5. Line: If I could rearrange the alphabet, I'd put U and I together.

Answer: Maybe it's a good job you can't then.I think this is cheesy, but a kind of sweet cheesy, (only kind of though!), I can't say it would wow me.

4. Line: Do you work at Kentucky Fried Chicken? ["No, why?"] Because you're finger lickin' good!

Answer: * stunned silence*Surely people don't use that anymore.

I remember the boys used to use this one on the girls up at primary school, and we weren't impressed by it then, so the odds are we're not going to be now!

3. Line: Do you believe in love at first sight or do I have to walk by you again?"

Answer: How about you just keep walking.

That's pure mature cheddar. I think if anyone ever said that to me I would just be shocked that people actually use it seriously and it's not just a joke.

2. Line: I lost my phone number. Can I have yours?

Answer: No. How is that going to help find yours?

And how can you loose your own phone number anyway?Another classic. The answer I put is an example of a negative response, but I can imagine this actually sometimes works. Just be aware you might get given the wrong number.

1. Line: Is your name Gillette? ...because you're the best a man can get.

Answer: No it's not, and before you ask it's not my middle name either.

This has actually been used on me, I assume the guy was joking, (well I hope he was because I laughed at him!), and if he wasn't I am very worried. This has got to be the cheesiest line I've heard, but it does make me laugh every time I think of this lad saying it!

Top games to play in a bar!

At the Hide Bar we like to think you can come and have a great night out with friends, have a few drinks... but here are just a few of our top ways that you can have fun in a bar!

1. Truth or Drink

The first is called truth or drink and all it requires is you to do is make the decision between drinking and answering a question truthfully.

As you move around the group in a circular fashion each person has to make the crucial decision, the key to the game as with most drinking games to keep upping the requirements for taking a drink instead of telling the truth. See how many rounds you can go without falling over.

2. The countries game

Is a very strange one but will test the knowledge of the whole group.

It is first thought to have originated from Newcastle were a record game of a few hours went on before people worked it out.

Everyone has to say the name of a country and the leader will say if they have got it right or not. It starts off with one person who is in on the game who gives a country name.

Then as everyone in the group takes their turn the leader will say if they have got it right or not.

The key to getting a right country isnt the country name but saying "ummm" as if thinking about the country before hand. People will be very confused about why they get some countries right but others wrong and will quickly be confused. And dont forget, every wrong answer will require a drink as a forfeit.

3. Fuzzy Duck #1

A good get-to-know-ya kind of game. Simple supplie: people and beer. Low buzz factor. Not too bad of a game after everybody's had a few.

Begin the game by saying "fuzzy duck" to the person to your left. That person then says "fuzzy duck" to the person on his/her left. This continues until someone decides to change the direction of play by saying "does he" (duzzy).

"Does he" changes the direction and the phrase that is said. Not only does the direction change but the people must say "ducky fuzz."

Now the game is going to the right with "ducky fuzz." The direction is then changed back by saying "duzzy." The words to say go back to "fuzzy duck."

Any screw-ups ===> drink. After awhile when the mistakes are more frequent, it turns into, "Does he F**ck?" or "F**k he does."

Variation: the same player cannot say the same thing consequtively within the same round. ie: if player 1 starts with "Fuzzy Duck," and play comes back around to him, he must say "Does He" before being able to say "Fuzzy Duck" again.

Top selling spirits to drink in the world...

A lot of spirits sank in 2009 as a result of the economic depression.

But it was also a banner year for spirits… the alcoholic kind. Many of the spirits on our top ten list were introduced this year, even though one of them is three decades old! Help us to raise our glasses to the top spirits of the year.

Think vodka is the best-selling alcohol in the world? You’re wrong.

While it is tops in the U.S., Scotch is king pretty much everywhere else.

In France anise-based Ricard is the No. 1-selling spirit, but blended Scotch whiskies take the second and third spots.

Not only are many of these brands unfamiliar outside of the country where they are most popular, but also, unsurprisingly, the lower the price point, the more popular the spirit. Of course, there are some exceptions.

In China, Chivas Regal is the best-selling brand of Scotch, even though it is a top-shelf brand.

In Britain results are as follows:

Smirnoff Vodka – 3.8 million cases, +46%

Bell’s Scotch – 1.3 million cases, -4.5%

Gordon’s Gin – 1.2 million cases, +9.4

In the U.S., on the other hand, the best-selling spirits are less expensive labels like Smirnoff, Bacardi, and Captain Morgan.

5 most popular cocktails for ladies!

If you fancy a girls night out at The Hide Bar, we offer a great range of cocktails!

We have done some research and come up with the five most popular ladies cocktails, some of these of which can be found on our Hide Bar Cocktail Menu.

These are also great recipes to try at home before your night out in Bury!

1. The Cosmopolitan

Also known as the 'Cosmo'.

It is an established leader among top-ranking alcoholic cocktails. It is believed that the Cosmopolitan first gained approval among the posh party-goers of South Beach, and made very popular from watching the stylish women of television’s “Sex and the City”.

RECIPE

1 oz vodka

1/2 oz triple sec

1/2 oz Rose's® lime juice

1/2 oz cranberry juice

2. Margarita

The sharp and delicious, Margarita is the best known tequila-based cocktail.

A good rule of thumb is to mix 7 parts of tequila with 4 parts of Triple Sec and add at least 3 parts of lime juice.

Enjoy your Margarita in a large cocktail glass with a salt rim around the edge, either blended with ice (a “frozen Margarita”), on the rocks, or just with some ice cubes added.

RECIPE

1 1/2 oz 1800® Tequila

1/2 oz premium triple sec (preferably Cointreau)

1 oz lime juice

3. The Mojito

A tropical cocktail that is extremely popular at sunny resorts and exotic vacation destinations around the world.

On a cold and gloomy evening, mix strong Cuban or Philippine rum with sugar cane juice (brown sugar will go, too) and club soda, and finish with freshly squeezed lime juice and some mint sprigs.

Pour the mixture into a tall glass with a few ice cubes, and pretend you are on Laguna Beach… If your Mojito is strong enough, it can really work!

RECIPE

1.25 oz Captain Morgan® Original spiced rum

12 mint leaves

1 tbsp sugar

0.5 oz lime juice

2 oz soda

4. The Pear Martini

A real delight amoung cocktails.

Take about 2 oz. of a good quality pear vodka (Swedish Pear Absolut is the best), a splash of fresh grapefruit juice, and a squeeze of lime juice. Mix all the ingredients with ice in a cocktail shaker, and strain into a cocktail glass.

Garnish your Pear Martini with lime peel and a slice of dried pear. Enjoy!

RECIPE

2 parts Stolichnaya® vodka

1 part pear liqueur

5. The Madera Eggnog

This hot and deliciously rich cocktail is ideal for chilly autumn or winter nights.

Although it takes some time to prepare, the cozy taste of the Madera Eggnog is well worth the effort! In a saucepan, whisk together 1 egg, 2 tbs. of sugar and a cup of milk, and bring the mixture to a boil. Add 2 oz. each of Madeira and brandy; do not boil.

When frothy, pour into a mug, sprinkle with grated nutmeg, and serve hot. It’s the best!

RECIPE

1 egg

2tbs sugar

cup of milk

2oz Maderia

2oz Brandy

So enjoy these simple treats and remember cocktails are a girls second best friend!

Music Night at The Hide Bar... A Great Success!

The music night we had last Wednesday at the Hide Bar was a smashing night.

With music from local bands, yummy food and drinks flowing.

We had local group 'The Larks' warm up the night with a great set, making way for 'Jason and the infidels' who played until about 11pm.

The Hide Bar serves some fantastic Cocktails, including the Classics and our new Contemporary range.

1. Always use fresh ingredients (especially lemon and lime juice)

Music Night... 25th November!

Great news our Hide Bar Music Night is now officially confirmed for Wednesday 25th November.

We have a few great acts playing the first of which are known as 'The Larks' a local band from Bury St Edmunds.

The Larks met at an Open Mic night at the pub where Chris played guitar. They now have worked on a good stock of covers and starting to write their own material too.

Another act to look out for is Jay Ducker who will be playing with his band named 'The Infidels.' Jason is a singer songwriter from Suffolk and will be performing his own material.

Along with the music we will also be serving fish and chips! So come along and join us!

Acoustic night to be held soon at The Hide Bar!

It's coming up to Christmas, but before we get to December, here at The Hide Bar we are planning our very own Acoustic Evening.

So we have sourced some talent from around the Suffolk area and getting everyone together for a chilled night at The Hide Bar on Whiting Street in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.

This evening is in the stages of construction at the moment so stay tuned for more details.
